Greek oregano is a perennial and herbaceous plant, its quality is considered one of the best worldwide. Oregano, in addition to the characteristic aroma and flavor it gives to food, also has many medicinal properties, with the main (medically known) active substance being carvacrol. In Greece, oregano is indigenous and is found in mountainous and rocky areas.

PROPERTIES: It is antidiarrheal, anti-inflammatory, bactericidal. In the form of decoctions, it is used to relax the intestines, expectorant for cough, helps with hypertension and arteriosclerosis. The essential oil of oregano (oil of oregano) is used for toothache. Oregano has 12 times more antioxidant activity than an orange, 30 times more than a potato and 42 times more than an apple. Also with a little oregano in your bird's food you keep diseases away. Another main use of it is against chronic rheumatism. The ancient Greeks knew its therapeutic value and used it by drinking its tea for colic and externally for swellings and for strabismus.

USE: It is used as a seasoning mainly in cooking but also less often as a decoction, which is reported to be excellent against cough. It is especially used in country salad. It is the basic seasoning of the Mediterranean countries and a basic ingredient of Greek and Italian cuisine.
